An expressway is a high-capacity road built for fast travel with few stops or interruptions. Cars may enter and exit only at specific points.
The SR 167 Expressway in Pierce and King County builds out vital connections between I-5, SR 167, and SR 509 in Tacoma. The first portion of the expressway is set to open in the summer of 2026, with tolling starting in winter 2026.
All lanes on the SR 167 Expressway are tolled and use “variable tolling.” This means that toll rates vary based on a set schedule by day of week, time of day, and direction of travel. Once the SR 167 Expressway is complete, there will be two toll points, and drivers will be charged a toll when they cross each toll point.

Toll Rates and Policies
There are two toll points located on the SR 167 Expressway – one east of I-5 and one west of I-5.
Everyone using the expressway will be charged a toll as they cross each toll point.
If someone crosses both toll points on a continuous one-way trip without a Good To Go! account, the applicable per axel Pay By Mail rate will apply at one toll point, but will not be applied at the second toll point. The Good To Go! pass rate will be charged at the other toll point.

Tolls are collected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Effective July 1, 2030, and every year thereafter, subject to review and potential adjustment by the WSTC, toll rates for the SR 167 Expressway shall be set as follows:
- All two-axle Good To Go! toll rates shall increase by 2.15%, rounded to the nearest five-cent interval, but not less than five cents.
- All two-axle Pay By Mail toll rates shall be set to $2.00 more than the revised two-axle Good To Go! toll rates.
- All multi-axle Good To Go! and Pay By Mail toll rates shall be set equal to one-half the revised two-axle rates, multiplied by the number of axles up to a maximum of six axles, and rounded to the nearest five-cent interval.
The SR 167 Expressway will provide critical connections to the state’s largest ports, improve movement of freight, and reduce congestion on local roads and highways.
Tolling will help fund $213.2 million in construction costs for both the SR 167 Expressway and the SR 509 Expressway, which is a portion of the total $2.83 billion Puget Sound Gateway Program funding. Tolling also funds operations, preservation, and maintenance costs for the Puget Sound Gateway facilities and support traffic management.
