Commissioners will also take public comment on a low-income toll discount proposal
KALAMA – The Washington State Transportation Commission will meet in Kalama on Wednesday, June 17, to hear about transportation in the region and efforts to improve safety, mobility and connectivity.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Alan Basso Room at the Kalama Mountain Timber Market, 254 Hendrickson Drive. The public is invited to attend the meeting in-person or online. Those who wish to attend virtually via Zoom may register on the commission’s website. The meeting will also be streamed live on TVW.
The commission will take both in-person and virtual public comment on general transportation topics at 10 a.m. Written comment can be submitted via email to transc@wstc.wa.gov.
Low-income toll proposal public comment
At 3 p.m. there’s also an opportunity for the public to comment in person and virtually on a proposal to implement a low-income toll discount program.
The program would offer a 50 percent discount on tolls to those who meet eligibility requirements, beginning with the State Route 509 and 167 expressways. If approved, the program is expected to go into effect with the opening of the SR 167 expressway later in 2026.
Other highlights of the meeting include:
- Regional collaboration: Public works directors from Cowlitz County and the region’s cities will share how they are working together to allocate resources and improve transportation across the region.
- Future of regional transit: Commissioners will hear about public transportation in Cowlitz County and plans to expand service there.
- Tribal transportation initiatives: Transportation leaders from the Cowlitz Indian Tribe will share projects planned and underway.
The meeting in Kalama is one of four local meetings the commission will hold across the state in 2026. The insights gathered will inform policy recommendations the commissioners make to the Legislature and the governor.
