Transportation Commission coming to Bellevue April 16-17 to hear about regional transportation issues

Toll proposals for SR 509 & 167 in King and Pierce counties also on agenda

BELLEVUE – As part of its statewide outreach, the Washington State Transportation Commission will meet in Bellevue on April 16-17. Local and regional leaders will share information on all things transportation in the region, with a focus on needs, opportunities and successes.

Also at the meeting, commissioners will select and issue a toll proposal for the new State Route 509 and 167 expressways that will begin opening later this year. The commission will also be advancing a proposal to implement “pay-by-mail” as an option for drivers using the express toll lanes on State Route 167.

The tolling work session begins at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, in the council chambers at Bellevue City Hall, 450 110th Ave. NE. The local meeting follows from 1 to 5 p.m. and continues Thursday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Both the tolling work session and local meeting will be streamed live on TVW. Those wishing to attend the meeting virtually may register for the Wednesday and Thursday sessions on the commission’s website. Virtual and in-person public comment are scheduled for 12 p.m. on Thursday. Written comments can be submitted via email to transc@wstc.wa.gov.

At the local meeting, commissioners will hear from city, county and transit agency leaders on transportation projects in the region as well as innovative solutions to traffic safety challenges and mobility issues. Topics include:

  • Pedestrian connections: The commission will hear about work to fully develop the 42-mile Eastrail trail corridor and the city of Bellevue’s Grand Connection project, a 1.5-mile pedestrian crossing over Interstate 405 and through the city.
  • Accessing new transit options: Sound Transit and King County Metro will provide updates on East King County transit links and efforts to help residents and visitors access transit options.
  • Traffic safety through technology: The commission will hear about how video analytics, adaptive traffic signals and other innovations are being harnessed to improve traffic safety for all.
  • City and county transportation partnerships: The city of Bellevue and King County will provide an update on transportation projects and planning in the region.

The information gathered during local meetings held across the state helps commissioners develop policy recommendations to the Legislature and the governor.
