OLYMPIA – The first stretch of new tolled expressways in the Puget Sound Gateway Program will open later this year. In preparation for the opening, the Washington State Transportation Commission is hosting opportunities for the public to learn more about the toll rates and policies under consideration and to provide comments.

Beginning Monday, March 24, the commission will launch an online open house where the public can explore and comment on the toll rates and policies being considered for State Route 167 and State Route 509 as part of the overall project. The online open house will be open through Sunday, April 6.

The commission is also hosting two virtual public input meetings on Zoom, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, and from 12 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2. Details will be shared on the possible toll rates and policies, and the public can provide comments.

The commission is expected to make a final decision on toll rates and policies this June, ahead of tolling starting on the new SR 509 expressway in October.

The Puget Sound Gateway Program between Seattle and Tacoma will help reduce congestion in central Puget Sound and improve freight movement with the addition of new tolled expressways on SR 509 and 167. Tolling is expected to begin in October on the first portion of the new SR 509 expressway, with additional segments opening in phases.
