Local transportation issues, update on I-5 interstate bridge tolling on the agenda
CHELAN – As part of the Washington State Transportation Commission’s statewide visits to cites around the state, the commission will hold a meeting in Chelan on July 24-25. The focus of the meeting will be on the local and regional transportation system needs, opportunities and plans.
Before the local meeting starts, the commission also will hold an hour-long work session at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, to get an update on toll-setting analysis underway for the Interstate 5 bridge crossing the Columbia River as part of the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program. The work session will take place in the City Council Chambers of Chelan City Hall, 135 E. Johnson Ave.
The local meeting follows from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and continues from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, in the City Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend.
The meeting – including the interstate bridge session – will be streamed live on TVW. Those wishing to attend the meeting virtually may register for the Wednesday and Thursday sessions on the commission’s website. Virtual and in-person public comment are scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 25. Written comments can be submitted by email to transc@wstc.wa.gov.
Commissioners will hear from local government, business and tribal leaders on how transportation networks support the area’s residents and economy while sustaining regional growth. Highlights of the topics to be covered at the meeting are:
- Port transportation links: The Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority will discuss its efforts to promote economic development through transportation, including air travel, since a merger of county ports in 2020.
- Economic development: Commissioners will hear about the integration of technology into agriculture and entrepreneurial efforts in the region.
- Tribal projects: The Colville Tribal Federal Corporation will give an overview of its Chelan-area business ventures.
- Union Gap overpass naming: The commission will vote on a proposal to name the Interstate 82 overpass in Union Gap the “Dan C. Olson Memorial Overpass,” after the city’s former mayor.
The meeting in Chelan is the third of four local meetings commissioners will hold in communities in 2024 as part of its statewide outreach program. The information gathered will inform policy recommendations shared with the Legislature and the governor.
