Transportation Commission meeting to focus on electrification of transportation system

Virtual meeting takes place Feb. 14-15

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Transportation Commission will hear about a wide range of developments in transportation electrification at its Feb. 14-15 virtual meeting, including a presentation on a pilot program for an in-road, wireless inductive charging system, an update on electric vehicle charging infrastructure and work to reduce the freight sector’s carbon footprint.

The public is invited to attend the virtual meeting, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, on Zoom. Those wishing to attend the meeting virtually may register for the Wednesday and Thursday sessions on the commission’s website. The meeting will also be streamed live on TVW. Public comment is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Some of the topics to be covered at the February meeting include:

  • Charging on the go: The Michigan Department of Transportation will share details about its pilot program for in-road, wireless inductive charging, the first in the United States, which enables in-motion charging of electric vehicles.
  • Investments in charging infrastructure: The Washington State Department of Transportation will discuss state and federal investments in infrastructure supporting alternative fuel vehicles, including electric vehicles.
  • Electrification in freight mobility: Commissioners will hear about work to electrify the freight sector from Titan Freight Systems, a Pacific Northwest-based company that is transitioning its fleet to zero-emission, battery electric trucks.
  • Puget Sound Gateway: Progress on projects on State Routes 509 and 167 to complete missing freight links will be shared, and tolling preparations will be discussed.
  • Building “Complete Streets”: Commissioners will hear an update on implementing the requirements for streets to be designed to support mobility for all users.
  • Airports’ impact on health: Commissioners will hear about a Public Health – Seattle and King County study assessing the effects airport operations have on the health of surrounding communities.
