In 2018, the Washington State Legislature directed the Washington State Transportation Commission (WSTC) to establish an Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Work Group to assess and research the development of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The Work Group was made up of over 30 members from various sectors and had seven Subcommittees focusing on topical areas.
The Commission was required to provide recommendations and findings each year through the Work Group’s operations from 2018 – 2023. The recommendations included possible policies, laws and rules to support the safe operation of AVs on public roadways in the state.
In 2023, the Work Group and the WSTC issued its final legacy deliverable report – The Road Map to the Future – which was the culminating report designed to help decision makers for years to come, as they navigate the complexities of preparing for and regulating the operation of AV’s on public roads.
