OLYMPIA – Local officials of the Yakima area will have the opportunity to share their transportation challenges and priorities with the Washington State Transportation Commission. Transportation Commissioners will meet with city, county, regional, and transit representatives next week in Yakima as part of their community outreach efforts.
The meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Cascade Room A, 401 East Yakima Ave., in Yakima starting at 8:30 a.m. The meeting is open to the public, and persons wishing to speak to the Commission may do so during the public comment period scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The meeting will consist of a series of panel discussions and short presentations about current successes and challenges, future plans and needs for transportation at the local, regional and state level. Representatives from Yakima, Yakima County, and the Yakima Valley Conference of Governments will talk about transportation issues from a local perspective. Washington State Department of Transportation’s Assistant Region Administrator Troy Suing will present the latest on state managed transportation projects in Central Washington.
Highlights of the meeting include a panel discussion on transportation and agriculture featuring panelists from the Washington Wine Commission, Lynden Transport, Inc. and the NW Horticulture Council. Later in the day, a panel of representatives from the Traffic Safety Commission, State Patrol, Sunnyside Police Dept. and the Yakama Nation will discuss traffic safety on rural roads specifically looking at efforts to affect injury and fatality trends among the Hispanic and Tribal Communities.
The Washington State Transportation Commission holds several meetings throughout the state each year to gain insight from local government, industry and citizens about transportation issues that affect their communities and region. This information helps the Commission to develop and implement a vision for transportation that reflects the policies, plans and priorities of the people of the State of Washington.
