OLYMPIA – The Washington State Transportation Commission will begin discussion of future operations and funding needs for ferries, and will discuss future toll rates for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, when it meets next week in Olympia. In addition, Commissioners will hear from the Puget Sound Partnership on its plans to improve the health of the Puget Sound. This presentation was originally scheduled for the Commission’s December meeting and was postponed.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 13 and 14. Both days’ sessions will begin at 9 a.m. at the Transportation Building, Commission Boardroom, 310 Maple Park Avenue SE, in Olympia. Commission meetings are open to the public and persons wishing to address the Commission may do so during the public comment periods scheduled for Tuesday at 4:15 p.m., and Wednesday at 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Commission is holding a work session regarding Washington State Ferries (WSF). Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) Ferries Division staff will brief the Commission on the draft long-range plan and operational strategies for ferries through 2030. The plan was released in December  2008 for public review and a series of public hearings is being held this month in ferry communities throughout the Puget Sound.

During Wednesday’s meeting, David Dicks, executive director for Puget Sound Partnership, will present the Partnership’s Action Agenda for restoring the health of Puget Sound. The Action Agenda prioritizes cleanup and improvement projects, and coordinates federal, state, local, tribal and private resources. It aims to protect the waters of the Sound, restore damaged and polluted sites, stop pollution at its source, and coordinate these efforts. Untreated stormwater runoff from roads and other impervious surfaces has been identified as a significant source of pollution for streams, rivers and the Puget Sound.

Also on Wednesday, the Commission will hold a work session with WSDOT staff to discuss the most recent traffic data and financial details for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Commissioners will review the Citizen Advisory Committee’s recommendations presented during the December 2008 Commission meeting and explore several possible tolling scenarios based on the most recent revenue forecasts. They will also discuss process, public input meetings and schedules that would be needed to implement any toll changes by July 1, 2009.
