OLYMPIA: The Washington State Transportation Commission is currently in the process of conducting a survey of ferry users throughout the entire ferry system. The purpose of this survey is to gather information from a representative sample of ferry customers on their travel behaviors and opinions.

To ensure the survey results are representative and statistically valid, the consultant conducting the survey on behalf of the Commission, Opinion Research Northwest, drew a random sample from all one-way trips within each of the ferry routes. This approach and the associated sampling plan being used for this survey are common to these types of studies and have been carefully developed and tested to ensure it meets all rules and standards as set forth by the Council of Survey Research Organizations.

To make sure the survey response counts, the Commission asks that ferry customers fill out and return only those surveys handed out on board a sampled ferry trip. Persons who do not want to fill out a hard copy of the survey can get a postcard while on board the sampled ferry trip. The postcard has instructions on how to take the survey electronically on the Opinion Research Northwest survey site.

The survey is not being given by phone and is not legitimately available on the internet for downloading. Each legitimate survey has a unique identification number on it to ensure duplicate or invalid surveys are not counted. If the same identification number is reused or copied, subsequent surveys submitted under that number will be not be valid and will not be included in the survey results.

The Commission has information about the survey posted here, including a list of frequently asked questions. If you would like to speak directly with someone at Opinion Research Northwest, you can contact them at 866-461-0700.
