OLYMPIA – Performance audits, a ferry customer survey, the Governor’s climate challenge, and election of new officers for Washington State Transportation Commission will be among the topics of discussion when the Commission meets next week in Olympia.

The Commission’s monthly meeting starts at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, at the Transportation Building, Commission Board Room, 310 Maple Park Avenue SE, Olympia, and is open to the public.

A representative of the State Auditor’s Office will update the Commission on several performance audits that are under way for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Performance audit reports are due out this summer on Washington State Ferries, WSDOT’s administration and overhead, and WSDOT’s project inventory and management. Another audit, highway efficiency and effectiveness, which looks at congestion issues, was started earlier this year, with a report due in October.

Commissioners are starting preliminary discussions regarding a Washington State Ferries (WSF) customer survey, which they will be conducting later this year. The purpose of the planned WSF user survey is to, among other things, better understand the opinions and expectations of ferry commuters, recreational ferry users and ferry-dependent communities.

The Commission will discuss transportation impacts on the environment as part of the Governor’s Climate Change Challenge to reduce Washington’s contribution to climate pollution and our dependence on foreign oil. Commissioner Richard Ford is a member of the Transportation Technical Workgroup which is examining a variety of transportation issues related to climate change and pollution including vehicles, alternative fuels, smart growth, transportation system efficiency and non-road options.

A new Commission Chair and Vice-Chair will be elected on Wednesday. The terms of current officers, Chairman Richard Ford, and Vice-Chairwoman Elmira Forner, will expire on June 30. The new appointments become effective on July 1.
