OLYMPIA – Next week
in Olympia, the Washington
State Transportation Commission
will continue discussion
on tolls for the new Tacoma
Narrows Bridge, review
the Washington State Department
of Transportation’s
(WSDOT) quarterly performance
measures report, and present
a proposal for a public
outreach plan.
The Commission’s
regular monthly meeting
starts at 9 a.m. on Tuesday,
February 13 and reconvenes
at 9 a.m., Wednesday, February
14. The meeting will be
held at the Transportation
Building, Commission Board
Room, 310 Maple Park Avenue
SE, Olympia, and is open
to the public.
During the Commission’s
January meeting, the Tacoma
Narrows Bridge Citizen
Advisory Committee presented
its recommended toll rates
for the Commission’s
consideration. On Tuesday,
Commissioners will examine
additional information
related to those recommendations,
including information about
the anticipated impact
on tolling resulting from
a delayed bridge opening.
The Commission is expected
to make a final decision
on toll rates in late April,
upon the adjournment of
the 2007 legislative session.
The State Transportation
Commission has statutory
authority for setting ferry
fares and highway tolls.
On Wednesday morning, WSDOT
staff will present the
latest “Measures,
Markers and Mileposts,” the
agency’s quarterly
performance and delivery
report. This edition for
the quarter ending December
31, 2006, includes annual
updates on pavement conditions,
highway maintenance, and
the environment. In addition,
the highway safety report
includes annual updates
on cable media barrier
performance, and pedestrian
and bicycle safety.
Also on Wednesday, Commissioner
Carol Moser will lead discussion
of proposed plans for a
statewide public outreach
campaign and a regional
forum on transportation.
The Commission currently
holds a number of meetings
with local jurisdictions
around the state to gain
insight about local and
regional transportation
issues. This outreach plan
would provide a structure
for additional Commission
activities within the state’s
communities. Commissioners
will begin formulating
plans for a future regional
forum that would bring
together local and regional
governments, transportation
providers and industry
representatives to share
information about transportation
issues and work towards
identifying potential solutions.
