OLYMPIA – Next week in Olympia, the Washington State Transportation Commission will hear about plans for the State Auditor’s Office performance audits, consider a resolution for naming a bridge in Pasco, and will discuss the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) latest project delivery and performance report. In addition, Commissioners will meet with representatives from local transportation coalitions that have had successes moving projects forward in Eastern Washington.
The Commission’s monthly meeting will start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, and reconvene at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16. The meeting will be held at the Transportation Building, 310 Maple Park Avenue SE in Olympia, and is open to the public.
On Tuesday, the State Auditor’s Office will describe its work plan for performance audits. The 2005 Legislature granted the State Auditor the authority to conduct performance audits on transportation agencies. Under this legislation, the State Auditor was provided $4 million to conduct performance audits in the 2005-07 budget period. Four audits are planned.
Also on Tuesday, Washington State Ferries staff will provide an update on its new electronic fare system, “Wave2Go.” The new ticketing system includes e-ticketing as well as ticket purchases at kiosks and tollbooths. WSF is piloting the new system on the Port Townsend – Keystone route in phases, and recently launched the e-ticketing component. E-ticketing allows customers on this route to purchase and print tickets online from their personal computer. WSF plans to begin rolling out Wave2Go to the rest of the ferry system this fall.
Representatives from the Port of Pasco and Pasco City Council will ask the Commission on Tuesday to take action on a resolution honoring Charles D. Kilbury, former legislator and Pasco Mayor. Commissioners will consider naming the SR 397 Ainsworth Avenue Overpass the “Charles D. Kilbury Overpass.”
On Wednesday, WSDOT staff will present the latest Gray Notebook “Measures, Markers and Mileposts,” quarterly project delivery and performance report. This edition is for the quarter ending June 30, and features annual updates on highway safety; Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS); transportation benchmarks; capital facilities; and the Environmental program’s permitting, fish passages, noise and air quality.
Also on Wednesday, Commissioners will meet with members of three transportation project funding coalitions based in Eastern Washington. By unifying and coordinating efforts, this community approach has been successful in securing funding for and advancing regionally significant transportation projects. The group's common goal is to encourage economic vitality by developing a list of prioritized transportation strategies to meet the long-range needs of their respective regions and explore funding opportunities for identified projects.
