The Washington Highway Board was formally
established on March 13, 1905. In 1951
a bipartisan Commission was created
with the authority to appoint the director.
In September 1977, Governor Daniel J.
Evans signed historic legislation to
create the state Department of Transportation
and the now familiar seven-member Transportation
Commission. We celebrate the many men and women who have helped shape the system of highways, roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries that we all enjoy today. The Washington State Transportation Commission does hereby extend its congratulations to the Department of Transportation on this important milestone in reaching 100 years and looks forward with great excitement on what the next 100 years of transportation will bring to the citizens of our great state.
